A new
era of pop music began ten years ago, with the birth of
a comprehensive, all-embracing work of art, aptly titled
Enigma. This group took up the daunting task of encompassing
voices from different cultures and from all places and rhythms,
and yet belonging to the contemporary spirits of the dance
floor. These seemingly contradictory elements created a
new sound, a new listening adventure and a new idea. Enigma,
headed by Romanian Michael Cretu, has tasted success from
the word go — and has till today sold over 22 million albums
worldwide. At a time where trends and fashions are changing
rapidly, it is astounding that a particular musical philosophy
should endure, continuously re-inventing itself with the
listener.
Cretu was born in the Rumanian capital of Bucharest
in 1957. He was discovered to be musically gifted at the
age of eight, and moved to high school. Cretu moved to
Germany at 18, where he was immediately accepted into
the Frankfurt Music Academy.
After a short interlude as a studio musician, Cretu
launched his music career. He then worked with wife Sandra
to produce the most successful pop act in the 80s. He
then started work on the Enigma album, which became a
top grosser worldwide. Cretu recently worked on The Screen
Behind The Mirror, his fourth masterpiece. The music is
different across the album, and comprises a wide variety
of genres. This music maestro believes in the enduring
quality of music, and presents this attitude in his fourth
Enigma album.
Cretu integrates many surprises into this album. The
legendary choir part O Fortuna from the world famous
oratorio Carmina Burana by Carl Orff is harmoniously
integrated in the album. Cretu’s music sends signals that
inspire and touch. You can dance to Enigma and dream,
you can meditate and march, suffer and love. It is "whole
body music" in the true sense of the word.
